The areas surrounding the lake include the towns of Tioha and Pilot Point. The aforementioned towns are infamous for possessing some of the most extravagant luxury homes in all of northeast Texas. Expansive mansions on large swaths of land are not uncommon in nearby developments. Many of the area homes include equine facilities and access to equestrian trails but of course the lake is what its all about.


Located on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, the waters of the lake were first contained in 1987. The almost thirty-thousand acre lake was named after the local Texas congressman Ray Roberts. Roberts was one of the heaviest supporters of the Lakes creation and preservation in the 1980's and helped to create the lake, containing floods, storing water and providing fish and wildlife a natural habitat for all to enjoy.

Parks and Recreation

Bicyclist-In-The-ParkToday the lake can be enjoyed by visiting Ray Roberts Lake State Park. On the parks land you can enjoy camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding, rollerblading and backpacking. On the parks waters, you can enjoy swimming, paddling and fishing. Photography, bird-watching and nature loving are also welcome.

Attractions and Activities

The lake lifestyle is all about fishing, swimming and boating. If fishing is your passion than you may enjoy a wide selection of fish including largemouth bass, white bass and catfish. The lake's marina is convenient to residents and provides a full service marina with boat repair and boat storage. At the marina residents can also fuel up, buy a fishing licenses, groceries, bat or eat at the restaurant.

In the Isle du Bois portion of the lake one will find many areas for camping, bird watching and hiking trails. The park also hosts an array of nature related activities, such as stargazing events, camping programs, discussions of the natural history of the area and bird watching events.

The twenty mile Greenbelt Corridor is the backdrop for many popular past-times. The multiuse trail extends from the Ray Roberts Dam area to Lake Lewisville and alongside the Elm Fork Branch of the Trinity River. Many equestrians make use of the twelve miles of horse friendly trail where as an additional sector of the public makes use of the ten miles which are for hiking and biking exclusively. Both the Johnson Branch and the Isle du Bois have a number of multiuse trails a fraction of which are paved.
