Sanger is a small city located in Denton County, Texas. With a population of approximately 7,000, the town is a wonderful example of a small town with an exuberant community spirit. The town is known for its agricultural lifestyle, close community and wonderful schools. The areas top schools are known for providing students with a quality education. Founded in 1886, the towns history has long been tied to ranching and agriculture. Today the town continues in the agricultural tradition, boasting a strong ranch community.
Before 1886 the area in which the town is now situated was just a stop on the cattle trail. The cattle were driven on the old cattle trails from North Denton County through the town and into northern markets. It was this very cattle industry which was largely responsible for the founding of the town. other agriculture which heavily contributed to the towns formation were wheat, oats, corn, millet and cotton.
Founded in 1886 the town was originally a stop of the Santa Fe Railroad.
The F.M. Ready family was the first family to arrive and settle in the town. Their arrival in 1887 also marked the arrival of the first steam engine to arrive on the new line. The Santa Fe line named the town "Sanger", in honor of the merchant family who owned stores in both Waco and Dallas. In 1920 the first highway was built, connecting the small cattle town to Dallas.
Parks, Recreation, Attractions and Activities
The town is very fortunate to be located just minutes from the Ray Roberts Lake State Park. With access to such a great park it is easy for residents to easily escape into nature. Residents enjoy an array of activities on the lake and in the parks woods.
Hiking, Biking, Fishing and watersports are all favorite acivities enjoyed on the beautiful State Park lands.
The Lake Ray Roberts Marina offers access to a wet and dry boat slip, a fuel pump, a service center, an RV park, a fishing pier, as well as pontoon boat rentals and kayak rentals. The marina is for many area residents the gateway to the many fun and exciting recreational opportunities offered up by the beautiful lake. There Wake boarding, sailing, fishing, swimming and tubing are popular activities.
Community events are an important part of life in this small town. Seasonal and annual events are offered for the enjoyment of the community.
